Herbalism

How mcMMO's Herbalism skill works. Green Thumb, Double Drops, Verdant Bounty, Hylian Luck, Shroom Thumb and the Green Terra super ability, with the real chances, XP values and duration formulas.

Herbalism is mcMMO's farming and foraging skill. You train it by harvesting plants: crops, flowers, mushrooms, cacti, sugar cane, vines, coral, nether growth and more. As you level you get bonus drops when harvesting (Double Drops, then Verdant Bounty for triple), your hoe can auto-replant crops (Green Thumb), you dig up rare items from foliage (Hylian Luck), you spread mushrooms (Shroom Thumb), and you unlock Green Terra, the super ability that tripples drops and supercharges Green Thumb.

Earning XP

Every harvestable plant has its own flat XP value from experience.yml:

XPPlants
1Chorus Plant, Glow Lichen
2Leaf Litter
3Kelp / Kelp Plant, Nether Wart Block, Warped Wart Block
6Crimson Roots, Short Dry Grass, Warped Roots
10Bamboo, Dead Brain Coral (all), Dead Bubble Coral (all), Dead Fire Coral (all), Dead Horn Coral (all), Dead Tube Coral (all), Fern, Grass / Short Grass, Nether Sprouts, Pale Moss Block, Pale Moss Carpet, Pink Petals, Seagrass / Tall Seagrass, Twisting Vines Plant, Vine, Weeping Vines Plant
11Bush
12Tall Dry Grass
15Firefly Bush, Wildflowers
20Melon, Pumpkin
25Chorus Flower

Crops only pay XP and bonus drops when fully grown. A sweet berry bush pays XP at age 2 and double XP at age 3 (fully ripe).

Bone-meal farming of tall plants is throttled. With ExploitFix.LimitTallPlantFarming on (default), XP from unnaturally tall plants is capped: cactus and sugar cane cap at 3× their base XP, bamboo at 20×, kelp at 26×, chorus at 22×. Harvesting from inside a vehicle earns nothing (Prevent_AFK_Leveling: true by default).

Double Drops

Double Drops is the bread-and-butter perk: a chance for every harvested plant to drop twice as much. The chance scales linearly with your Herbalism level:

ModeMaxes out at levelChance per levelMaximum chance
Standard100+1%100%
RetroMode1000+0.1%100%
Herbalism:
    DoubleDrops:
        ChanceMax: 100.0
        MaxBonusLevel:
            Standard: 100
            RetroMode: 1000

So a level 50 standard player doubles roughly half their harvests; at level 100 every eligible plant double-drops.

Verdant Bounty: triple drops

Verdant Bounty is the high-level upgrade to Double Drops: when a drop is rolled, Verdant Bounty can turn it into a triple drop instead. It unlocks very late and tops out at a 50% chance:

ModeUnlocks atMaxes out at levelMaximum chance
Standard100100050%
RetroMode10001000050%
Herbalism:
    VerdantBounty:
        ChanceMax: 50.0
        MaxBonusLevel:
            Standard: 1000
            RetroMode: 10000

While Green Terra is active, every bonus-drop roll is automatically a triple drop; Verdant Bounty's RNG is skipped.

Green Thumb: auto-replant & mossy blocks

Green Thumb has two jobs.

1. Auto-replanting crops. When you harvest a mature crop with a hoe (and you're not sneaking) and you have the matching seed in your inventory, Green Thumb has a chance to instantly replant it. It works on wheat, carrots, potatoes, beetroots, nether wart, cocoa, torchflower and sweet berry bush. The chance scales with level:

ModeMaxes out at levelMaximum chance
Standard100100%
RetroMode1000100%

Green Thumb also has ranks (unlocked at levels 25 / 50 / 75 / 100 in Standard) that control how grown the replanted crop comes back: higher ranks replant crops at a later growth stage, so they finish sooner.

RankStandard levelRetroMode level
125250
250500
375750
41001000

2. Making blocks mossy / grassy. Holding wheat seeds and right-clicking certain blocks spreads green growth onto them: cobblestone → mossy cobblestone, dirt → grass, stone bricks → mossy stone bricks, and so on. This is gated by its own permission nodes (see below).

Hylian Luck

Hylian Luck gives a small chance, when you break certain foliage (tall grass, ferns, flowers, etc.), to find a rare item instead, themed after smashing bushes in Zelda. It caps at a 10% chance:

ModeMaxes out at levelMaximum chance
Standard10010%
RetroMode100010%

Hylian Luck unlocks at level 1. The specific treasures and their per-item drop chances come from the Hylian treasure table in treasures.yml.

Shroom Thumb

Shroom Thumb lets you spread mycelium onto dirt and grass. Hold a mushroom and consume one brown and one red mushroom to attempt it; on success the block becomes mycelium. The chance caps at 50%:

ModeMaxes out at levelMaximum chance
Standard10050%
RetroMode100050%

If the roll fails, the two mushrooms are still consumed.

Farmer's Diet

Farmer's Diet makes farmed food (bread, carrots, melon, etc.) restore more hunger when eaten. It improves in 5 ranks:

RankStandard levelRetroMode level
120200
240400
360600
480800
51001000

Green Terra: the super ability

Green Terra is Herbalism's super ability. While it's active:

  • Every eligible harvest gives a triple drop (no RNG, Verdant Bounty's roll is bypassed).
  • Green Thumb is guaranteed and effectively boosted by one rank, so crops replant at a more advanced growth stage.
  • You can right-click blocks with seeds to spread green growth (the same mossy/grass conversion as Green Thumb, but spent directly through the ability).

Activating it

  1. Hold a hoe.
  2. Right-click the air to ready your hoe ("You ready your Hoe.").
  3. Left-click a block within the activation window to trigger Green Terra.

Green Terra unlocks at Herbalism level 5 (Standard) / 50 (RetroMode).

Duration

duration (seconds) = 2 + min(cap, Herbalism level) ÷ IncreaseLevel
ModeBase+1 second everyLevel capMax duration
Standard2 s5 levels10022 s
RetroMode2 s50 levels100022 s

A level 50 standard player gets 2 + 50/5 = 12 seconds; a level 100+ player gets the full 22.

Cooldown

Green Terra has a 240-second cooldown by default (Abilities.Cooldowns.Green_Terra). There is no maximum-length cap by default (Max_Seconds.Green_Terra: 0).
